A plan has been drawn up to supply 25 per cent of the energy of the Bayan Khundii gold project in Bayankhongor province from renewable sources.
Erdene Resource Development, which is developing the project, has signed a power purchase agreement with MCS International to build a solar and diesel power plant. Under it, 25 per cent of the project’s total energy consumption is to come from solar — renewable — energy.
Gold production at the Bayan Khundii deposit is planned to begin in the second quarter of 2025.
“Bayan Khundii is one of the world’s highest-grade large open-pit gold mines and at peak production will become Mongolia’s largest gold producer,” said Peter Akerley, President and CEO of Erdene Resource Development, which is listed on the Mongolian and Toronto stock exchanges. The deposit holds 513,000 ounces of gold and can produce an average of 87,000 ounces a year at peak.
